25 Weeks Pregnant

This week in my pregnancy countdown, my baby is the size of a rutabuga (a large round yellow-fleshed root that is eaten as a vegetable) and about 13 1/2 inches long.  Baby is still working on building up some fat and looking more and more like a new born (instead of an alien? hehe). Nothing too different this week, although I have noticed that my eyebrow hairs are very sparse, I'm starting to get really overheated easily, and I'm getting more nose bleeds these days...sigh.  I guess if that's the worst of it for now, I'll take it! Also, I'm not one to pay too much attention to the scale, … [Read more...]

Summer Camp Giveaway: Catalina Island Camps

I recently heard about an amazing new giveaway from The SITS Girls and wanted to spread the word to those who know of a deserving child between the ages of 8 and 17 that would enjoy a trip to Los Angeles for a summer camp program! The overnight program, Catalina Islands Camps, is one of the country's best, located off the coast of Southern California with a private beachfront!  Activities available, range from sailing, kayaking and climbing to gardening and cooking -- to name a few. But beyond the physical activities, the camp aims to develop life long skills in a child such as a … [Read more...]

3 Easy Tips for a No-Fuss Baby Registry

When I was planning my wedding two and a half years ago, I never thought anything could be more daunting than creating a wedding registry...until I was tasked with creating a BABY registry! Wow! To sort through hundreds of baby products to find the most affordable, recommended and brand-worthy items for your new creature! Overwhelming! Searching for tips to get started online, can only lead to more frustration, as the general "advice" offered often includes a useless list of the obvious: start early, think about your needs, do research, use a checklist! Well DUH!  What us first-time mothers … [Read more...]

Product Review: Neutrogena Naturals

There are a multitude of things a pregnant woman must be cautious about.  Not only do we have to worry about the things we eat or the physical labor to avoid, but we also have to be very careful about the everyday products we use on our bodies, face wash included. I was really surprised to learn that there are various chemicals in the seemingly benign products we use daily, that can have serious side effects on a fetus.  Don't get me wrong, I was aware of the obvious "no-no" products to avoid that can cause serious birth issues: Accutane, retinoids and salycylic acids to name a few, but it … [Read more...]

24 Weeks Pregnant

In addition to celebrating the Giants win in Super Bowl XLVI this past weekend (which baby Chili enjoyed in utero!), it was also a time to celebrate the 24 week mark! According to BabyCenter.com, my little nugget is growing steadily and is just over a pound, measuring almost a foot long (picture an ear of corn!).  Seems a little lean, but according to the weekly tracker, his body is filling out proportionally and he'll soon start to plump up :).  It's also a time for continued brain growth, taste bud development as well as lung and respiratory tree development -- guess I better pack more … [Read more...]

Letters from Daddy 1/24/12

{Letters from Daddy are a series of letters from expectant father to son, on what it means to be a man.} Dear Chili, As I live and breathe today, you are still about four months away from emerging into this world to take your very first breath.  You will find yourself born into a world very different than mine, at least as of the writing of this letter.  It will be a world different to anything I have experienced, because you will be in it.  You are the difference.  Your life will be the one to change my world, and all those who may come to know you.  You carry, in your very being, all … [Read more...]

Eating Healthy for Baby

I have to admit it: I wish I could eat healthy all the time now that I'm pregnant.  But the truth is, it's just not possible.  Don't get me wrong, I've definitely changed my eating habits for the better now that I'm expecting.  I mean, I always make sure to add at least two pieces of fruit each day (whether it be adding a banana to my morning cereal or forcing an apple down my throat during my afternoon break)...I also make it a point to add a green salad medley into either my lunch or dinner (albeit a small one). It may not sound like much, but before my pregnancy I got away with eating a … [Read more...]

Letters from Daddy 1/15/12

{Letters from Daddy are a series of letters from expectant father to son, on what it means to be a man.} Dear Chili, 2012 is gearing up to be the most amazing of my life. Perhaps it's fitting that the year you are to be born is "The Year of the Dragon".  Even more interesting is the paranoia surrounding the "end" of the Mayan calendar this year.  Some easily suggestible folks believe the world might end this year, but do not count me among them.  2012 is the year the world BEGINS for you; it is the year you are unleashed upon this world, to represent the Taney name and tradition.  You … [Read more...]

23 Weeks Pregnant

So I'm closing in on 23 weeks of my first pregnancy...and I can't believe that I'm more than half way through the ride!!! Now more than ever, my baby bump is noticeable.  It's a very exciting time...especially now that I'm well into my second trimester :). I am actually starting to experience the "pregnancy glow" that I often hear about (and which I never thought was possible during my first trimester)!  Gone is the morning sickness (aka "all day nausea"), exhaustion and ravenous appetite (although I definitely still need my food, I no longer get that "have-to-eat-right-this-second-or-else" … [Read more...]

Can Pets Sense Pregnancy?

I've always heard that your pets (dog in my case), can sense when you are expecting.  But how true really is this, and what signs should you look for? Most research suggests that dogs and cats do detect differences in your mood, posture, behavior, and body chemistry that clue them in to the enormous changes you're experiencing. They can become overly protective, never leaving your side and growling at everyone who merely crosses your path, including your spouse.  But not all animals exhibit the same behaviors. To dig deeper into this phenomenon, I tried to analyze the particular changes … [Read more...]
