Every year, I’m stumped as to what gifts the kids and I can get their dad for Father’s Day. I mean once we run through our typical list of dad gifts like a new wallet, sports paraphernalia, sleeping in, or even homemade gift ideas, I’m usually left thinking…is there anything else he’d like?

Well this year as we find ourselves in the midst of a global pandemic and need to practice good social distancing from others, I knew I had to get a little more creative and find gift ideas for dad to enjoy right at home.

Another way to make Father’s day extra special at home is to let dad sample a variety of drafts with a sampler set that includes a platter, chalk, and glasses.

All my boys are major reptile fans, especially when it comes to lizards, frogs and turtles — teenage mutant ninja turtles to be exact. So I figured a fun way to help them share their love of dad was with a simple handprint turtle card.

Each of my boys has grown to love turtles over the years, whether it was from our DIY turtle costume for Halloween or simply from the everyday routine of playing with their turtle stash. Their father was in fact an avid Raphael fan growing up.

So when you need a fun and memorable way to wish dad a happy Father’s Day this year, stick with those cute childhood memories.

A few years ago we took a popular massage shirt for dad and revamped it to be a fun twist on dad’s favorite things at the time (his Pomeranian, Dunkin Donuts and beach life). Dad’s favorite things massage shirt was thus born! It was a huge hit!

Massage Shirt for Father’s Day 

To start, I made sure I got the okay to use one of his white t-shirts and gathered a large sheet of drawing paper and these specific sharpies that work well on various surfaces including fabrics. (affiliate link)

I used a dark marker to draw out a large road by freehand on a sheet of paper and then inserted the paper inside the shirt to trace — it also helped to prevent bleeding onto the other side a bit.

It was a bit challenging getting a straight line on the fabric since you need to press down and release the markers as you work. So I just went with it and used a dot pattern to achieve the roadmap.

Once the track was all set, I decided to improvise and sketch out dad’s favorites, again by freehand – adding stops along the road that daddy loves: a morning coffee and donut, dino land, the beach house and his beloved dog we’ll never forget. I thought adding a few personal touches like this, would make the gift super special and memorable!

Lastly, I added in my kid’s handprint as a cute add-on (but mostly so dad could direct them to place a hand wherever he needed a rub lol). Think: Touch the pink #1 — win-win!

I was thrilled on how it all turned out, despite my artistic abilities (hehe!) but I am so excited to let him try out the shirt this weekend and unwind a little this Father’s Day!

If you aren’t so artistically inclined — don’t stress, just create simply shapes and patterns or better yet, try some fun stencils to perfect the look!
