Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the 2018 New York Baby Show — one of the largest events for new and expectants parents featuring an array of must-have baby products.

The show was a chance to not only check out some favorite baby brands (like Babyganics and WaterWipes) that I continue to use for my own kids, as well as a time to learn about some interesting new baby products on the market.

Between the old and the new, there were a few standout products that I wanted to highlight for other moms and dads looking to survive the early years.

Chicco Infant & Toddler Carseat

Chicco was the first carseat brand I used for my first baby. We had selected the Chicco Keyfit30 Infant Carseat (along with the Chicco Snap-n-go) on my baby registry for managing the day-to-day with a newborn. It was highly-rated, safe for baby and easy to transport from car to stroller without waking baby.

But the one thing I WISH it included was ease of use for when my infant became a toddler — because when my son was 18 months and a little too big for the Infant carseat, I could no longer use it while keeping my child rear-facing as is recommended at that age.

So when I saw the NEW convertible carseat with all it’s helpful features, I was quite impressed!

The Chicco Fit2 Infant & Toddler Carseat came with a few upgrades that make the cost quite manageable:

Easily convert from infant to toddler position with a simple adjustment to the lever

The ease in which parents with little carseat skills can adjust the positions is AMAZING!

More upright, spacious seating with adjustability and extended leg room for toddlers 9-24 months

Making it easier for your child to stay comfortable in the rear-facing position for as long as possible

All this without taking up extra space in your car!

Includes SuperCinch Latch tightener for a secure fit with a fraction of the effort

Click-in attachment can be used with other Chicco stroller for convenient traveling

One other thing that I saw as a major improvement in the design from the Infant carseat is that now parents can easily detach carseat from base with one-hand on the carrier handle — I remember how much of an effort it was to use both hands to release the carrier from the car, so this change makes a big difference in ease of use when you’re already running late! Wish they had these sooner!!

Mumbelli Infant Bed

One new baby brand I got to see up close and personal at the Baby Show was the Mumbelli Infant Bed. This infant bed is really ideal for parents who co-sleep…and let’s face it most of us do this one way or another those first few weeks with a newborn. The bed kind of works like a bassinet but can be placed on the bed with mommy for safer sleeping.

One of the key features of this bed is that it has and adjustable foot-insert which gives it a womb-like feel to comfort your bundle of joy. The foot-insert allows you to keep baby snug and is adjusted as your baby grows.

The secret to Mumbelli’s unique womb-like feel is our Adjustable Foot Insert, which moves as your baby grows to maintain continuously the comforting shape and sensation your infant depended on all those months in Mom’s womb. Because our Adjustable Foot Insert moves to any position inside the Mumbelli, it provides a perfect fit for every newborn as it grows and adjusts to the world.

What sets this bed apart from other side sleepers is the comfort and sense of security it provides to baby — with that womb-like feel baby can sleep better and soothe easier. It is also portable so you can move it from room to room as you go about your day. A great choice for any mom with a new baby in the house!

Baby Bod Program

If there’s one thing moms with a new baby struggle with it’s coming to terms with their postpartum body. Because let’s face it, it isn’t so easy to jump back into your pre-baby bod after having a baby. In fact, most of the time our bodies will forever be slightly different. But that doesn’t mean we can’t bring it back to what it was with a little self-care.

So it piqued my interest when I learned about the BabyBod® Program at the Baby Show. It’s a program designed by leading women’s physical therapist to help moms reclaim their bodies through self-care tips for diastasis recti, mommy tummy, urinary leakage, pelvic pain or pelvic organ prolapse.

The program is designed to help women throughout all stages of motherhood from pregnancy and new moms to experienced postpartum mom (even if it’s been years since you’ve given birth!).

You can get the book on Amazon or use it along with the newly developed coaching program as you work to revolutionize your mom bod!

I remember the first time I packed a hospital bag as I prepared for labor and delivery. I wanted to make sure I had everything the experts recommended to bring for the hospital stay: insurance cards and paperwork, baby diapers, clothes, pacifiers, bottles, blankets and a few essentials for mommy. It was a little overwhelming to try to include everything possible I would need to care for my new baby.

Fast forward 4 years later, as I prepared for baby number three I learned a thing or two about what an expectant momma really needs to pack for that stay.

Below are tips to help reduce the stress and help you pack those essential items for your hospital stay:

What to pack in your hospital bag for BABY

While you obviously want to pack all you can for your new precious little one, know that the hospital will have most of those basics baby items in stock. This includes diapers, ointment, baby hat, and socks. They’ll also have plenty blankets, a bulb syringe and those easy to change side-snapping half-onesies to make changing a breeze! Remember it’s a maternity ward so why wouldn’t they have these must-have baby items handy?

If you have any doubt be sure to ask your doctor or speak to a hospital staff in advance.

Of course, you’ll still want to pack a few personal things for your bundle of joy, just in case. I recommend included the following:

Emery boards

Most newborns come out of the womb with sharp claws so be prepared! Plus, many hospitals won’t do the filing for you apparently for safety and liability reasons.

Make sure to bring a few boards as they are safer than nail clippers (Here’s a great one you can buy here.)

Baby mittens – to prevent scratches (Buy here.)

Take-me-home outfit

Cute muslin swaddle blanket (perfect if you’re having a photographer come in for newborn photos!)

Extra bulb syringe to help clear fluid buildup from babies mouth (common in c-section babies)

While the hospital will have these available and give you one to take home, it never hurts to bring your own for quick access as sometimes ringing the nurse can take awhile. Plus you’ll most definitely need another one in no time — buy here!

What to pack in your hospital bag for Mommy

Change of clothes

For when you depart and for a more comfortable time nursing. Button down shirts and loose sweat pants are good options!!

Comfy pajamas

In case you prefer something other than the hospital gown – mine got tangled a few times so towards the end of my 4-day stay I could have used a favorite jammy; However, I was fine with the hospital gown during the first few days as the recovery was tough and messy.

Slippers – although your hospital may provide no-slip socks, if you want something a bit more comfy as you walk around to-and-from the bathroom or nursery, slippers with no back are perfect!

Flip flops – to make showering easier

Toiletries

I was really surprised at the lack of toiletries available at my hospital so wish I would have packed my own shampoo and body wash during my first hospital stay. There was a generic blue-green wash/shampoo in the shower that didn’t do much for a pick-me-up, even though I stayed at one of the “top” hospitals in my state.

Make sure to include your toothbrush, toothpaste, hair ties, deodorant, lotion and any other items you’ll need to freshen up once you are feeling up to it!

Phone/tablet, camera & chargers

Water bottle

There will obviously be cups on hand, but I found that nursing made me super dehydrated and I was constantly calling for a refill — having a large personal water bottle on hand would have been so much better. Buy one of my favorite bottles HERE.

Nursing pillow

If you have a pillow you love, bring it! You can always use pillows from the room, but having something that is made for baby like this one is a great alternative.

Breast pads & cream

Your hospital may or may not have these, so bringing your own helps to treat sore nipples and prevent milk leaking. I LOVED these organic washable pads!!

Pre-registration paper work, insurance cards etc.

DOWNLOAD the hospital bag checklist below to prepare for delivery –>>

Remember, while you want to pack whatever items you think will help make your stay as comfortable as possible, don’t overdo it. Baby will have everything they need in stock so just pack a few extra things for YOU, mommy!

Let me know if I missed anything!

As a new mom, I always wondered if there were educational baby toys that could actually help my little bundle of joy reach major milestones. Milestones like reaching, pressing, babbling, crawling, talking that make us so proud as parents, but more importantly show that our children are thriving and developing normally.

Of course, every child is unique and develops at their own pace, but providing a rich sensory experience and tools to help baby get there is just as crucial.

Throughout the years, I made it a point to find the best early development toys for infants. Toys that would help develop an emotionally intelligent baby and provide them with essential skills later down the road.

Whether you’re looking to teach baby to listen and reach or walk and talk these brain-boosting learning toys will provide plenty of sensory stimulation and physical skills that will be important through child development.

BEST DEVELOPMENTAL TOYS FOR BABIES

Lamaze Peek-A-Boo Forest Soft Book

This soft playful peek-a-boo book features fun rhymes for story-time and bonding.

It was one of my favorite picks for reading with baby, especially because it was soft to touch and easy to toss in the washing machine when used as a teething toy :).

The peek-a-boo flaps in the bright colorful baby book help develop hand-eye coordination and fine-motor skills, making it a great choice for baby’s first toy! Definitely something to add to your Amazon shopping list before the holidays. See what other moms say about it here!

Sassy Developmental Bumpy Ball

This baby-friendly developmental ball is a great toy for babies who are learning to get a more firmer grasp. With chunky colorful bumps to encourage reaching and grasping, this clever toy helps develop emerging fine motor skills.

It actually is a toy that baby can play with from birth to three years old — and is said to include gentle rattle sounds to create a neural connection in baby’s brains! Read more about it here!

Infantino Textured Multi Ball Set

I purchased these textured sensory balls each time my kids were babies. For babies 3-6-month-old, they offer a wide range of sensory fun. The different sizes and shapes help baby develop tactile senses.Read: Best Baby Toys from 0-12 months

Stacking Toys by GreenToys

Stacking cups are a huge hit with kids of all ages, especially as your baby gets closer to 6 months and is approaching new developmental milestones. Although I’ve owned a variety of stacking cups over the years, Green Toys are very eco-friendly and safe for baby. They are free of BPA Phthalates, PVC or other coatings, eliminating the fear of toxins and lead — a major plus when you have a teething baby putting everything in their mouth!NOTE: Although babies typically can really learn from stacking cups after 6 months, I like to introduce them just a little before to peak their curiosity as they begin reaching and grasping more frequently. If Green Toys are out of stock — this is another brand favorite and more affordable cup are a great alternative.

Baby Einstein Take Along Tunes Musical Toy

I recommend this award-winning Baby Einstein musical toy for 3-6 months because of the power in listening to music for babies. Music is said to help develop cognitive skills and a wide set of perceptual skills that can lead to speaking later in life. And this little portable musical toy plays 10 melodies, is easy for baby to grasp and perfect for is easy for on-the-go!

VTech Busy Learners Activity Cube

This VTech activity cube is great for babies near the 6 month age (and fun to play with through 36 months!). As curiosity grows, your little one can play with this 5 sided toy that encourages discovery and exploration.

And we all know that active babies love sound and movement, making the motion sensors and sounds are a great way to attract attention and encourage crawling! Since the toy is often out-of-stock on Amazon, this Mozart-friendly brand makes an excellent alternative.

Infantino Squeeze and Stack Block Set

I really loved letting my babies play with these Infantino blocks as they approached 6 months of age. Not only did they provide a stimulating tactile experience (each block has a different animal and numbers) for baby to feel, but they also were a favorite to use as a teether. Really a great gift idea for any baby 3-6 months!

You just want to pack up the cooler and load everyone in the car to make your way to the beach. But then you remember you have an infant to look after too…one under 6 months that can’t exactly be in the sun all day like his brothers.

1. Light Clothes

As parents, it’s often easy to overdress baby throughout the year. We forget that they too can sweat and develop heat rash from wearing too many layers, so it’s important to make sure little ones are dressed appropriately in the summertime.

This means opting for single layers or thin breathable clothes like a onesie or loose top and bottom. You can find swimwear that contains SPF to protect baby’s delicate skin even more!

2. Hat

It’s so important to keep the sun’s harmful rays away from baby — and a wide-brim hat (and one that covers their little neck and ears) is so crucial! Look for ones that even contain SPF like this one — our favorite!!

Don’t forget to start early! If you get in the habit of putting a hat on your baby, think how much easier it will be to get them to wear it once toddlerhood hits. One of my sons hated hats…and I really couldn’t blame him since I didn’t introduce hats ’til he was about a year.

3. Baby Tent

A quick search online for baby canopy, sun shelter or tent is bound to bring numerous results, but they are all basically the same thing: shade and sun protection for baby!

These have made so much of a difference for me when I’m toting around a baby and can’t find adequate shade.

So when you’re heading out to the beach (or yard or playground for that matter) be prepared with your own sun shade just in case! Such a wide array of styles and options to choose from — just look for ones that are durable and contain UV protection.

4. Stroller Fan

This is one genius tip I only learned about recently – I can’t believe I didn’t discover it sooner! Did you know there are little portable fans made for baby??

These kid-safe fans you can buy here have soft blades made from foam — not sure how well a grabby toddler would do with them but they are ideal for your little bundle.

All you need to do is attach the fan to the stroller or clip it to a baby carrier or carseat while going for a walk on the beach. Such a fun way to keep baby cool indeed!

5. Muslin Blankets

These light-weight swaddle blankets are a must-have for baby that I’ve mentioned a few times before. They are pretty much the only blankets I use these days and a perfect choice for the hotter months when you just need a thin breathable blanket to shade baby.

But with any blanket in the summertime, be careful how you use them, as a new study reports that even shielding baby with a blanket can have serious consequences.

That’s why when I am using my muslin blankets I always make sure baby isn’t completely covered or that the carrier isn’t closed off so I know he is okay and not overheating.

6. Carseat Liner

It’s no mystery how hot little ones can get in the car/carseat during the summer months — tons of tragic stories fill the news. And don’t think taking your carseat out of the car removes all the heat either. If you have a darker carseat or thick-cushion liner, baby can still overheat when you’re trudging him along in the snap-n-go.

I often forget to change my standard carseat liner — one that works great for added support and comfort for infants — but can be a bit much in the summertime.

So remember to look for a thin, breathable liner that can easily absorb moisture to prevent baby from getting unnecessary heat rashes – we like this natural one made from bamboo.

7. Kiddie Pool

YES, YES! A kiddie pool is definitely another fun, genius way to keep baby cool at the beach. You can pretty much find the inflatable, portable pools everywhere these days – Amazon.com has decent sales on these!

If you have a baby under 6 months of age that can’t be in direct sunlight and/or wear sunscreen yet, these shaded baby pools make such a great alternative to laying directly in the sun! And if your baby isn’t quite sitting up yet, you can definitely still prop them up or hold them while they cool off their little feet and tushies in the shade (always with proper supervision of course)!

As a mom of a baby, toddler and preschooler, I know all too well how much of a production it is to get all the kids out of the house for a beach trip, especially when your baby isn’t quite ready to be in the sun.

This post was sponsored by SwimWays as part of an Ambassador Program for Influence Central. I received products to facilitate my review.

Did you know that according to the CDC, children ages 1-4 have the highest rates of drowning compared to all age groups? It’s an especially frightening statistic for moms of toddlers and babies to face.

That’s why whether we’re heading to the pool, lake or beach, the last thing I want to find is that we just don’t have the proper swimming gear or flotation devices to make our little ones feel safe in the water. There are so many different types of swim aids to choose from, it’s often overwhelming.

Luckily, we’ve had the opportunity to try out a few and wanted to share our favorite swim floats to keep little kids safe. These floats are ideal for babies, toddlers and preschoolers as they learn to become at ease with the water and prepare to learn how to swim.

Best Swim Floats for Babies, Toddlers or Preschoolers

SwimWays Baby Spring Float

SwimWays is the first brand I would turn to if you are a mom of a baby or tot learning to get comfortable with the water. The SwimWays Baby Float is ideal for babies age 9-24 months. We used this float with our oldest son when we started to introduce him to the pool. It was a great way for him to “get his feet wet” and learn to kick and navigate water from a safe and secure place.

The Spring Float was actually the first float many of our friends and family would also turn to when helping little ones who didn’t yet know how to swim, feel comfortable in a bigger pool. Here’s the bright pink and orange one our family loved using in the pool last summer (the arm floaties and goggles were just added upon kid request ;)!

The SwimWays float is comprised of a soft mesh seat with a lower center of gravity, safety valves and separate air champers to ensure your child’s security. Your child simply steps into the float and “wears it” around their waist and the float does the rest. There is also a detachable canopy to offer plenty of shade on those super sunny days.

While nothing can replace supervision when a child is in or near water, SwimWays is a brand parents can trust with over 40 years experience. They offer an array of products and a Swim Steps program to help kids practice water safety.

The float is at the top of our list because it’s a great starting point for first-time swimmers and babies and means less worries at the pool and more time spent enjoying the summer!

It has been our go-to pick for helping our kids learning to swim and we’ll continue using it to help introduce our baby to the water later this summer as he watches his older two brothers splashing about!

You can find the Spring Float at Toys R Us stores.

Swim Trainer

This is another favorite swim aid of ours, especially as a child grows into a toddler and more confident swimmer.

The Swim Trainer is a 2-in-1 flotation device: both a chest flotation and arm band float that provides added support and security for beginner swimmers. As your child’s skills improve, they can even detach the water wings to use alone in the water!

This float is specially designed with versatility in mind: it provides balanced flotation for chest and arms and helps keep kids comfortable.

There are a number of kid-friendly characters to choose from like this Finding Dory version below.

Life Jacket & Swim Vests

As your child grows older and begins to master swimming skills, it doesn’t hurt to add some extra safety measures when at the beach, lake or deep end of the swimming pool. That’s where swim vests or life jackets are extra helpful.

They keep your child buoyant and safe in the water as they continue to learn to swim. Simply use the zipper or buckle to secure in place and your child is good to go.

Many vests like this one below, even include SPF for that added level of protection.

Call them baby hacks, must-have items, or just sanity-saving products for new parents, some things are worth investing in when you have small children.

And that’s exactly what I’ve rounded up today: baby items that make a heck of a difference in the day-to-day when you’re juggling life with a toddler and baby and simply struggling with the basics, and ready to pull out your hair!

Check out all of these very cool baby products below…I’m sure you’ll find something you wish you had sooner!

<img loading="lazy" class=" aligncenter wp-image-8684" title="Struggling with caring for a baby and toddler? Have no fear, these sanity-saving baby products will make life a LOT less stressful! Whether you call them baby hacks or helpful tools, you'll love all of these!" src="https://mommysbundle.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/baby-products-for-new-moms-689x1024.png" alt="Struggling with caring for a baby and toddler?
This post may contain affiliate links.

1. Woombie Swaddle

Let’s start with the basics. You’re home with a new baby and haven’t quite mastered the swaddle. No need to fret. It does take a bit of practice (even if those nurses in the hospital made it look easy-peasy!). This Woombie Swaddle is your solution. Not only does it keep baby safe and warm, but it also keeps your baby’s arms down to prevent the startle reflex which can keep them up at night. Win-win!2. Onesie with Shoulder Flaps

Ever wonder about the purpose of those shoulder flaps adorning most onesies? They aren’t just a fashion statement! These bad boys help you handle those unexpected diaper blowouts. You simply pull the onesie flaps down each arm working your way towards the tushie, instead of the opposite direction! You can pretty much find this design everywhere these days, but here’s a super cute one moms can’t seem to get enough of.3. WubbaNub Infant Pacifier

I recently discovered this genius invention that provides a new mama with much relief! I’m sure you know what I’m talking about. When baby just needs to be comforted but the darn paci won’t stay put. Instead of hovering over to pop it back in place, use the WubbaNub pacifier. This sanity-saving “toy” acts as a weight to help keep the paci in place for longer, happy sucking!4. Keep-it-Kleen Pacifier

Hailed as the only pacifier that closes as it drops, the Keep-it-Kleen Pacifier is another product to help mommy stop stressing the small stuff. No more running to the kitchen to sanitize that binky every 5 minutes. Another amazing invention you can buy here!

5. Leg Warmers

Most newborns go through about 8-12 diapers a day; that number may drop a bit as baby grows, but it’s still pretty significant. Knowing you’ll be changing diapers around the clock, makes these leg warmers super attractive. It means less clothing to pull on and off baby, speeding up the process! Just leave baby in his/her onesie for easy diaper-changes while the leg warmers work their magic!6. Mirror

Let’s face it: as a new mama, it’s a bit nerve-wracking to drive around with a newborn. You just want to be certain your baby is comfortable while rear-facing. Ease those fears with a special mirror that helps you keep a close eye on baby with a quick glance, and focus on driving safety to your destination.7. Mommy Hook

I’ve lost count on the number of times I’ve had to run to the store to grab just a FEW THINGS, that turn into MANY THINGS. Having a mommy hook that easily attaches bags to stroller, is just what a mom with her hands’ full needs!

8. Laundry Bags

Sick of all those mismatched socks filling your laundry bins?? Me too. But with little kids, this is the norm.

I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve spent way too many hours scrambling around the house for missing socks. I was so glad to discover these mesh laundry bags that you just fill with dirty socks and toss in the wash to make sorting later, that much easier!9. Seatbelt Holder

I simply love this idea! Getting the kids buckled into their car seats is always a huge ordeal. I’m always struggling to get the seatbelt straps and harness in place, but this awesome carseat helper uses magnets to keep the straps out of the way so I can get my kids into the car quickly.

10. Carseat Canopy

Chilly outside? Braving a blizzard? Need to protect baby from direct sunlight? Whatever the weather, take baby out of the house with confidence using the car seat canopy. This brilliant car seat cover shields your precious little one from seasonal changes or unpleasant temperatures. It has velcro straps that attach to your car seat handle and a slit down the front so you can keep a close eye on baby with plenty of air.

11. Sippy Cup Leash

What mom hasn’t found herself playing the case of the missing sippy cup yet again and again?! If you’re tired of losing all those cups, this sippy cup strap will help you have one less thing to worry about! Simply secure the strap to the cup, and attach the other end to wherever it is you want to keep it.

12. Nose Frida

Whether its cold season or allergies, there comes a time when mommy will need to clear baby’s snotty nose. It may feel strange to “suck” out baby boogers as the technique calls for, but the nose frida is a painless, genius way to clear those boogies in a jiffy!

13. Safety Harness (aka Leash)

Before you look away in shock, think about it. Once your baby is a little older and becomes a toddler, things are bound to get a little hectic. Even more so when you’re a mom to a baby, toddler (and maybe an older child too!) and need a way to keep tabs on all kids when out in public. This kid-safe harness or “leash” is a MUST for those who have a rambunctious toddler and runner!

14. Traveling Poncho

We’ve all heard about the dangers of wearing bulky coats in the car during the cold season. But how do you put a baby or toddler in a freezing vehicle in the middle of winter? Fear not! Just have your child wear this adorable traveling poncho. It goes OVER the seat belts, acting as a warm blanket to keep your child happy while you wait for the car to get comfy, without compromising safety! Genius!

15. Baby Carrier

I can’t stress enough, the importance of having some kind of carrier or wrap like this one to wear your baby. It just gives you the ability to multitask during those crazy moments in motherhood. This is a MUST if you have more than one kid!16. Portable High Chair

When you’re out and about, and your kid won’t stay put, sometimes you need more than a harness. Thank goodness for new inventions like these portable high chairs to take to grandma’s or the next family party. No more balancing baby on your lap to eat while you try to grab a bite yourself (mom-life at it’s finest!).

17. Infant Airplane Seat

Any mom who’s had to travel with a baby on a plane will tell you what an adventure it can be. So anything to ease the experience is welcomed. This adorable little airplane seat that resembles a hammock, may be just what the doctor ordered to help get mommy and baby through the trip!

18. Toddler Urinal

I just had to throw this last one in as a boy-mom! But really, isn’t it simply awesome?! As your baby grows and turns into a dirty little toddler, potty training will surely be an experience. Help those little boys transition from sitting on the potty to standing with this fun little frog urinal so they’ll really want to go pee-pee. Hey, if it works, why not?So many great unique ideas for new moms — which is your favorite?<img loading="lazy" class=" aligncenter wp-image-8686" title="Struggling with caring for a baby and toddler?

Inside: Is your child ready to swim this summer? Learn the basics to help your baby or toddler learn how to swim safely early on.

Memorial Day weekend, otherwise known as the “unofficial” start to summer is around the corner. And we all know what this means: more time spent outdoors to have fun and splash about in the pool or at the beach!

So now that my 2 and 4 year-old have comfortably mastered basic pool and water safety, it’s time to kick it up a notch and help them actually learn to swim. Personally, I like the idea of introducing kids to the water as early as possible for safety reasons…because we all know how curious babies and toddlers are!

Did you know that according to the CDC, drowning is the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages 1-14? As a mom to small children, that is a frightening statistic!

So what better time than the present to start educating kids about water safety, especially with National Learn to Swim Day here. This day (started by SwimWays in 2012!) serves as a reminder to parents and caregivers to promote water safety and raise awareness about the invaluable lesson of swimming — because it could literally save their lives!

To get our little ones ready to swim, we are focusing on the 5 key areas below, this summer.

1. Start in shallow water.

I know how intimidating a large in-ground pool may appear to a toddler who is just “getting their feet wet” when it comes to pool safety. So don’t overwhelm them. Start teaching little ones to swim in shallow water, so they can reach the ground with their feet. This will both help them feel more comfortable, and also help thwart any fears of going under without mommy or daddy to save them!

2. Practice kicking.

Because kicking is such a crucial skill for swimming, you can help kids master this skill by sitting them at the pool’s edge and letting them go at it. Then they can easily practice those skills in the water with some support.

3. Submerge.

This might not be a baby or toddler’s favorite part, but it’s one they will have to practice if they are truly learning to swim. When we first took our now 4 year-old to beginner swim classes, they would have each child jump into the water for a 1 or 2 seconds to learn to manage their breathing. You’ll want to practice full submergence with your kids so they will learn to hold their breath underwater.

4. Teach them to float.

Have your child lay on their backs across your outstretched arms. Support their body in the water and encourage them to relax and stretch out their arms and legs. This will take lots of practice, but focusing on making them feel comfortable and relaxed will help them learn to float, which is an essential part of learning to swim.

5. Use a quality float.

To really hone in on any area or skill required to learn to swim, you’ll want to make sure you have a reliable swim float that will help your baby and toddler practice water skills in a safe, confined space…because for most kids, making that full transition from kiddie pool to swimming pool is naturally going to take some time.

One float that I’ve seen moms everywhere use AND one that we are happy to own is the SwimWays Baby Spring Float — the single best float on the market today!

This brightly-colored float is amazing and perfect for beginner swimmers for so many reasons!

For starters, it helps support babies 9 months to 24 months to stay comfortable and happy in place. It also provides the added support babies need as they practice balancing, kicking and paddling.

As a parent, I love the fabric-covered inflation for maximum durability and know my child will sit comfortably in the mesh seat. The float also has a removable canopy for sun protection.

The float has a low center of gravity, safety valves and separate air chambers to ensure security at all levels. For floating reliability, the Baby Float includes a sewn-in patented inner spring around the outer edge for stability while in the water.

You can purchase the Baby Spring Float and other SwimWays products.

This is part of a sponsored collaboration with DiMe Media and Dreft. All opinions are 100% mine.

We’ve had a tough few months being cooped up indoors, waiting for Spring to finally arrive with the sun and warm weather. Our boys can never get enough of outdoor activities like exploring nature, splashing around with water, and simply running around to burn off energy. They just need that time outside to be kids!

So we’re thrilled that the days are finally getting longer and the sun is starting to shine.

But with all the change of seasons, comes more allergens in the air and higher temperatures that can cause skin irritations in little ones.

And with a newborn joining the family, I’m even more cautious when it comes to spending time outdoors and protecting baby’s delicate skin.

My boys suffer from mild eczema — usually showing signs of dry skin that can be treated with organic lotions and creams. But I don’t just like to treat those symptoms, I like to prevent them altogether.

We always make it a point to look for hypoallergenic products that will come into contact with their skin. Everything from lotions to fabrics that they wear! And Dreft, the no. 1 baby detergent recommended by pediatricians is one of our favorites, with it’s gentle, hypoallergenic formula perfect for little ones!

Dr. Hes, a mom and medical director of Gramercy Pediatrics, knows this all too well and offers tips on how to keep baby comfortable during this allergen season.

<img loading="lazy" class=" wp-image-8596 aligncenter" src="https://mommysbundle.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Tips-to-protect-babys-gentle-skin-in-warm-weather-643x1024.png" alt="Protect your baby's delicate skin from allergens and skin irritants as the weather gets warmer.
1. Shade the sun

When spending more time outside, don’t forget to keep baby’s skin safe:

Babies 6 months+: If your baby is 6 months or older, liberally use sunscreen, reapplying often! Also, avoid exposing your baby to the sun during peak hours — generally 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Don’t forget to dress your baby in protective clothing like a hat with a brim and sunglasses.

Babies younger than 6 months: Younger babies should be kept out of direct sunlight. Dress them in protective clothing and shielding them with light covers works well.

2. Make bath time beneficial

Did you know that over exposure to water can actually rob skin of natural moisture? That’s why it’s actually okay to scale back on bath time. This will help avoid the resulting itch — which is important for kids with eczema! About 10 minutes is plenty of time for water play and a quick scrub. Remember to use warm water (vs. hot) and leave the suds to the very end. Add a mild cleanser to keep skin soft and itch-free. Gently pat skin dry and moisturize with lotion to protect baby’s soft skin.

3. Load up on liquids

Hydration during the spring and summer months is important as baby gets more active outdoor time and sun exposure. Give kids water throughout the day. Infants should nurse or take a bottle often; older kids should tote a sippy cup or reusable water bottle. Include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and smoothies in your child’s diet too.

4. Choose the right fabrics and care for them properly.

When it comes to fabrics, it’s so important to choose gentle and hypoallergenic items to care for the items that touch baby’s sensitive skin. It’s also essential that fabrics be cared for properly. Wash baby items with a specially-formulated product such as Dreft, the #1 baby laundry detergent choice of pediatricians to be gentle and hypoallergenic on baby’s skin.

5. Protect Problem Skin

Our third baby arrives in just a few short weeks. That will be three little boys under four in the house. And we have so much left to do to prepare…

The nursery needs to be furnished with the crib our toddler is currently sleeping in. Onesies and blankets have to be washed. Diapers and wipes have to restocked. Bassinet has to be reassembled.

I haven’t even thought about packing a hospital bag!

I must admit, preparing for that second (or third) baby isn’t as easy as the first. With the first, you usually have a baby shower to help cover the cost of those must-have items…you also have a little more time during the day to do everything. With the next few, not so much. Poor second baby usually gets shafted when it comes to new gear.

RELATED: What You REALLY Need to Pack in Your Hospital Bag

Baby Products to Buy New

But before you start saving everything under the sun for the next baby to reuse, be sure to think about what items you need to buy brand new. Not only due to wear and tear, but also for safety reasons.

Below is a list of baby items that should be brand new. Obviously some of these will depend on how long it’s been since the first baby used them, so make sure you take that into account.

(Click on the links to see some of our favorite brands.)

Diapers/Wipes (for obvious reasons)

Grooming Kits (Emery boards, nail clippers, brushes)

This kit here and here contain just about everything you need for grooming

Bath Wash, Shampoos, Lotions

Burp Cloths & Wash Cloths

Baby Hats, Mittens & Socks

Pacifiers

Bottle Nipple & Brush

Sheets

Bassinet Pad/Mattress

Buying a new mattress for your bassinet ensures baby is sleeping in comfort and that there are no issues when it comes to proper head shaping — i.e. flat head that can happen to a baby sleeping on the same side of a mattress (especially one that’s caving in or worn out)!

Crib Mattress

Again this will depend on wear and tear, but for the most part experts recommend buying a new mattress if the old one was not organic as the off-gasses and synthetic material can be harmful to baby and possibly linked to SIDS.

Car Seat

If the car seat has been in an accident then there’s no question about it — you’ll definitely need to purchase a new one – even if you can’t see any physical damages. No accident? An expired date on the label means a new car seat is in order. So make sure to check that out.

Baby Products to Reuse

With a growing family, saving money becomes more of a priority. That’s why recycling baby gear is crucial. This is when hand-me-downs are a God-send!

The items below are typically great for reusing — as long as they are in decent condition. If you have any doubts, always check the manufacturer’s expiration date.

Play Yard

Stroller

Carrier

Baby Clothes

Bouncer/Swing

Bassinet

Baby Monitor

High Chair

Car seat

This one is on both lists as you can see…because it really depends on what that date says on the label!

Baby furniture

Dressers

Changing Table

Crib

As long as the crib you’re reusing is in good condition (without any loose or missing parts) and is within a few years old, you should be fine. However, always check to see if the crib has been recalled as a safety measure!

Baby Products to Reuse with Replacement Parts

Breast Pump

I would not recommend sharing a breast pump with others or taking one as a hand-me-down. However, if you have one from a previous baby that is in good condition, reusing shouldn’t be a problem so long as you replace the exterior parts including valves, tubes and breast pump attachment pieces. You may also want to contact the manufacturer to ensure mechanics are in order. Note: If your pump is making strange noises or is more than a couple years old, buying new may the more practical alternative.

Bottles & Bottle Nipples

Again this is more of a date and hygiene question. If bottles are fairly new and BPA-free they will be okay for reuse. However, if theres a big gap in baby spacing you’ll need to replace. And always replace bottle nipples since an old nipple can contain harmful bacteria.

Snap-n-go or Double Stroller

If you need a new car seat to connect with your snap-n-go you’ll obviously want to replace that for a working stroller. If it’s baby #2 you may find a double stroller to be a good investment — especially one where you can attach the infant car seat or carrier.

Yes, it’s a daunting task figuring out what you can reuse and what you should buy brand new for your next baby, but evaluating condition, age and simply checking for recalls will help make the process a little less stressful so you can focus on the new bundle of joy joining your family.
