I always knew being a mom would bring so much joy and love into my life…I never imagined it would leave me feeling overwhelmed and lacking an identity at times.

Handprint Flower Picture Frame

Materials:

• Picture frame
• White card stock
• Pom poms
• Pipe cleaners
• Acrylic Paint & brush
• Photo

To start, we colored a wooden picture frame purchased at Michael’s for only $1 (gotta love those bargains!). Let your child paint the frame in a favorite color or simply paint it yourself by going along the grain to create a nice finish and canvas color that “pops”.

Next trace your child’s hands on a white sheet of paper (we used card stock here since it’s not as flimsy as construction paper).

We used three handprints for our daffodil flower bouquet and added pom poms and pipe cleaners for the center and stem parts.

Love the contrast of the different colors beside each other!

Add a favorite photo of mom’s to the frame to complete the look!

You can even personalize the frame with a special “I love you” message for mom using letter stickers or a permanent marker.

I just love how it turned out and will remember to treasure these special moments!

These days it seems I’m always running from one room to the next and misplacing jewelry in the process. I don’t wear too much jewelry with the kids grabbing at me and all, so end up taking it off and placing it aside…usually some place I can’t remember.

But with Mother’s Day a couple days away, I wanted to create something simple enough for my toddler to help with, but special enough to work as a keepsake for mommy (and grandma). (This is a perfect gift to give mom on any holiday, actually!)

After getting some inspiration from this awesome hand-shaped ring dish, I knew I wanted to create something similar but with a little twist for Mother’s Day. I decided I could use a cookie-cutter and create a flower-shaped jewelry dish small enough to carry around and leave in the bathroom for storing one or two pieces of jewelry.

How to Make a Jewelry Dish with Kids

Materials:

• Air Dry Clay (I used this one from Crayola)
• Acrylic Paints & Brushes
• Cookie cutter (I used a heart-shape and tulip-shape)
• Spatula
• Cup of Water
• Toothpick

First you’ll need to gather about two small handfuls of clay and roll-out. You can use a rolling pin if you have handy, but I didn’t want mine too thin so just used my hands, flattening it out and pounding down until I got a smooth surface with about half an inch thick.

For the first dish, I used a heart-shaped cutter with jagged edges. I used water to soften the edges and create a little basin to hold jewelry in place. I wanted to make sure my rings would stay in place so added a little cylinder (about an inch of clay) to the center. To attach the piece, I used water again to soften and join.

Then I used a tulip-shaped cookie cutter to create the exact pattern I needed. This made it much easier than trying to trace or draw free hand.

You can even personalize the gifts with a toothpick — we carved out “Nana” and “[Grand]Ma”.

The hardest part for me was picking up the clay to set aside for drying. It got sticky and wouldn’t peel off easily, so I used a wet spatula to scoop up!

Because I was working with air-dry clay, there was no need for baking. I just let the clay harden over a couple nights. Note: If you are in a real rush, you can use less clay (about 1/4 inch thick) and it should dry overnight or pop it in the oven at a low temperature to speed up the process.

When dry, have your child paint the clay. My little guy had fun going wild with the pinks and green color here. It was a real piece of art :)!!

We then used two different shades of pink for the flowers. My 3 year-old did a pretty good job – I just filled in the edge/stem.

You can seal the color with mod podge to complete the dish and add some shine too.

I love how pretty these turned out and can’t wait to make more of these next year! Perfect for any other special occasion too!!

Did you know that every loving interaction with mom or dad can help baby’s developing brain?

From a gentle touch to a pleasant smell, everyday rituals and interactions children experience create memories that will stay with them for a lifetime.

Studies have shown that by age three, 85% of a baby’s brain is developed. That’s why it’s so important to begin stimulating baby’s senses from the moment of birth.

A mother’s touch especially can do wonders for her babies.

That loving touch has the power to soothe, delight and nurture baby’s developing mind. And we’ve all seen it: baby responds to our touch with giggles and coos, which in turn causes us to smile and laugh too. The continuous engagement is exactly what baby needs for learning, communicating and growing.

I cherish every expression of love I receive from my children during those bonding moments we share.

During our bath time routine, I love to let my boys splash about in the water and blow bubbles as we giggle together. It gets messy, but I know they are getting plenty of sensory stimulation like developing positive associations with bath smells — linked to improved mood and alertness.

My 1 year-old gets a thrill from simply splashing water with his hands and soaking himself in the process! He finds it hilarious :)!!

And my 3 year-old will use every excuse he can to take a bath. He finds so much joy and laughter in dumping water over his head and “swimming” with his sea creatures.

I know they love the time they get to spend in the bath and it makes me happy to know they will carry those positive memories with them for a lifetime.

Our bedtime rituals are also another important time when the power of touch and smell come into play.

Both my boys love a soothing back rub and lullaby as they drift off into dream land. My youngest is known to fall asleep quickly in my arms after a gentle rock and song. He finds comfort in my scent — which isn’t surprising considering babies recognize moms by smell alone!

However, getting my toddler to sleep has been more of a struggle recently. If I’m not there to massage his back or offer continuous hugs, he has fits and outbursts, crying for me to come in and hug him. And it makes sense that he seeks that comfort in touch because research has shown routine touch and massage helps improve sleep quality and quantity when part of a bedtime routine (whereas children who receive minimal touch and stimulation can often experience sleep disturbances).

So I always make it a point to go in and tuck him in, whether it’s to give him a rub or tousle his curls as we say a little bedtime prayer. He sometimes starts chatting up a storm and asking me if I like certain animals or cartoon characters like he does. It takes some time, but it’s a nice bonding time we share.

There’s never  a dull moment in my life with the boys fighting for my attention, but it’s natural that they crave a mother’s constant touch and affection.

I’m trying to enjoy these moments while they last and remind myself that every touch, every hug, and every smile is stimulating and providing them a healthy development.

Excited. Joyful. Thankful. Blessed. Anxious. Nervous. Disbelief. Shocked.

These are a few words real moms used to describe that very moment they found out they were expecting…with the realization that a new life was forming inside their very body and the whole world as they knew it was about to change.I can still recall the first moment it happened to ME. The scene plays over and over in my head.

It was late in the evening. I had a hunch and decided it was the moment of truth. My husband lay on the bed surfing the internet as I nervously made my way to the bathroom not telling him that I was taking the test, but simply  rummaging through draws of toiletries until I finally found the stick. I got to it immediately, but my heart thumped so loudly I thought it was echoing off the walls. The whole moment felt surreal. I quickly turned it over when I was done peeing and set it down on a napkin as to not reveal the answer. I couldn’t dare look at it…yet. I was ready. I wanted this. But there were so many emotions going through my head. Do we deserve this? Are we ready…really ready? Will we be good parents?

If it’s a positive pregnancy test, that means a child is growing inside my body. What a miracle that is in itself! This will change everything!! I took a few minutes. Said a little prayer for whatever was to be and turned it over.

It was positive! I was going to be a mom!

OMG!! Is this real?! Is this truly happening? How can a test hold so much power and meaning?! I was in shock. Overjoyed, thrilled, excited for the new chapter in my life. But also anxious for what this meant.

I remember the chuckle that came from my husband after I told him, “I’m pregnant.” He looked up at me from his screen and excitedly asked, “What? Are you sure?!” “OMG!” he laughed.

We weren’t in shock that it happened…because we were anticipating it. But even a planned pregnancy can trigger a little disbelief initially. It’s just amazingly unbelievable when it actually happens. It’s a moment that will forever live on in your memory.

Although there are many symptoms that are present early on in pregnancy, the home pregnancy test is the first step to discovering the truth.

As Mother’s Day quickly approaches, I can’t help but contemplate on all those emotions that I was inundated with the moment I realized I was going to be a mom. From what I was feeling to the reactions of our families, the memory is always with me.

There’s just so much love that fills your heart, despite all your worries and fears. It’s that love that you carry in you that will get you through and make you a great mom!

And of course in a house surrounded by baby products, the first thing that came to mind was baby oil! I figured I could start with that to get smooth skin and the add a couple of other ingredients for a fun homemade sugar scrub.

But I didn’t just want to do any sugar scrub, I was looking to add some natural fruity ingredients to hydrate my skin even more. What better way to do that than to add an array of berries like raspberries, blueberries and blackberries which are said to contain anti-oxidants and multiple vitamins to help prevent wrinkles, blotchiness and even acne to maintain a youthful appearance.

So that’s when my berry sugar scrub for soft baby skin came to mind!

Here’s what you’ll need:

• A small jar to store the scrub – I used a baby food jar, but this one is perfect too!
• A mixing bowl
• 1-2 cups of granulated sugar
• 1/4 cup of baby oil
• 1/4 cup of baby wash
• 1/2 cup of berries (raspberries, blueberries etc.)

First you’ll want to measure out 1-2 cups of sugar depending on how much sugar scrub you’re looking to make. I used a little under 2 cups because I wanted a smoother consistency for a softer feel on the skin (similar to this one).

Combine about 1/4 cup of baby oil and baby wash to the sugar – adding more or less depending on the consistency you prefer. I used my favorite type of baby oil from JOHNSON’S along with their head-to-toe line baby body wash.

Use a blender to grind the berries and then pour that mixture into the sugar.

I used my empty baby jars for easy storage and topped with a couple extra berries — which almost gave my sugar scrub a smoothie look, haha!

You can use the scrub as an exfoliator, hand scrub or full body scrub anytime it’s needed.

This is such an easy way to get soft, hydrated skin without leaving your house! It also makes a wonderful homemade gift idea, especially as Mother’s Day approaches. Because we all know mom could use a little rejuvenation from time to time!
