Let’s face it: pregnancy on it’s own is a monumental experience. Your body is going through so many physical and hormonal changes to make room for the growing life inside you…which often comes with many symptoms. You’re fighting exhaustion, morning sickness and trying to follow a healthy prenatal plan.

The last thing you want to see is another long list of things to avoid when pregnant.

I get it. It’s overwhelming.

But the first trimester is a really major phase of pregnancy. It’s when your body and the new life forming inside you needs the most attention and care. That’s why anything you choose to do during the first three months should be done cautiously…that’s especially true when it comes to any type of beauty routine you follow.

This post may contain affiliate links.

From hair treatments to skincare routine, harmful chemicals are everywhere. Tread cautiously on the beauty treatments below especially during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Hair Treatments

So your roots are growing in. And you can’t stand the way it looks…especially combined with the way you’ve been feeling lately.

I’ve been there.

Getting your hair colored to look and feel your best is something every woman should treat themselves to. But listen to your doctor here and wait until you get the clearance. My doctor gave me the okay after 16 weeks — she said it was completely fine (I had asked her at about 20 weeks when my dark roots were about 4 inches long!). Boy did I feel relieved to know I could actually care of my appearance too!

Look, you may disagree here and say “a friend dyed her hair at 4 weeks”…whoops! And it’s not to say that doing so then is going to cause some serious issues to baby, but if you’re looking to be on the safe side it’s best to wait a little longer. Every body and reaction is different, so everyone’s experience will also be different.

It’s just important to know that many other hair treatments like chemical straightening procedures are even more serious…especially ones like Keratin or Brazilian which can contain various amounts of the carcinogen, formaldehyde. Those should definitely be avoided!!

Skincare Procedures

You may have heard of them before: retinoids, salycylic acids, parabens etc. Chemicals that are found in many everyday cleansers and lotions to help fight wrinkles, acne or other skin flaws.

The truth is, most of these chemicals can be very toxic to your developing baby because pretty much everything that you apply to your skin is absorbed into the body. If you do enough research you’ll find that the experts recommend using these in low doses topically or steering clear of them all together (especially oral retinol medications)…because many of these can cause serious birth defects.

If you are looking for alternatives, just make sure you opt for cleansers and skin products with organic ingredients. Some of my favorites include Neutrogena Naturals, Mustela or Burt’s Bees, to name a few.

Read More: Neutrogena Naturals Cleanser Review

Teeth Whitening Treatments

While keeping your teeth fresh and clean is obviously something you want to do daily (pregnant or not) going in for special whitening treatments or bleaching should be off-limits when expecting. So many chemicals have shown “inconclusive” results when it comes to effects on pregnant women. Meaning there’s not enough evidence to show they are dangerous, nor that they are safe. So most doctors recommend sticking with your normal brushing routine — you may even want to hold off on that over-the-counter whitening toothpaste as well!

Nail Procedures

While treating yourself to a mani-pedi is something you’ll most likely opt for at some point during your pregnancy, steer clear of the more time-consuming nail trends like acrylic and gels that often come with toxic fumes. These fumes not only can make you nauseous, but can cause serious issues to baby with frequent exposure.

If you’re getting fancy nail treatments, make sure the room is well-ventilated and that you wash your hands thoroughly afterwards. Of course to be on the safe-side, you may just stick to the normal mani-pedi!

Massage & Spa Procedures

Okay, let me backtrack for second. Massages during pregnancy can be VERY helpful. In fact, you’ll probably need several after the many physical changes and pressure your growing baby will put on your hips and back. Just make sure you’re going in for a prenatal massage with a therapist who is certified. Many will tell you that they steer clear of deep tissue massages and specific pressure points as to not release toxins into the body. To keep you and baby safer.

And if you are visiting the spa, stay away from saunas, hot tubs and tanning beds — because heat treatments and activities that increase your internal body temperature when you’re expecting, can be very harmful to you and baby!

While you shouldn’t feel like you can’t take care of yourself physically or treat yourself to your favorite beauty trend during pregnancy, it is simply best to err on the side of caution early on when it comes to the more serious hair, skin and body treatments for the healthiest outcome.

I participated in an Influencer Activation on behalf of Influence Central for Neutrogena. I received samples to facilitate my review and a promotional item to thank me for my participation.

Now that summer is officially here, the days are getting longer and hotter than ever. While we are thrilled to spend more time outdoors running around and splashing about, the extra hours of sunlight also mean more need to protect the delicate skin of our family members, especially little ones.

My boys have sensitive skin that often burns easily. As infants both suffered from mild eczema. That’s why it’s essential they wear a dermatologist-recommended sunscreen every time we are out and about. The sun’s rays can do some serious damage in a matter of minutes; it’s a frightening statistic when you hear that sunburns in children increase the odds of developing skin cancer later in life.

So my go-to brand for sun protection has always been Neutrogena® — I’ve suffered from a number of skin problems throughout life (from acne to sunburns), and love how gentle yet powerful the products have been — they are ideal for sensitive skin! That’s one of the reasons I use the Neutrogena baby line for my own kids.

Recently, the National Eczema Association awarded Neutrogena with it’s Seal of Acceptance. Products include:

NEUTROGENA® Pure & Free® Baby Faces Ultra Gentle Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 45+

NEUTROGENA® Pure & Free® Baby Sunscreen Stick Broad Spectrum 60

NEUTROGENA® Pure & Free Baby Sunscreen Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 60+

NEUTROGENA® Sensitive Skin Sunscreen Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 60+

NEUTROGENA® Pure & Free Liquid Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50

With this recognition, Neutrogena is providing adults and babies with eczema/sensitive skin a safe sunscreen option that protects using naturally sourced sunscreen ingredients.

The Pure & Free Liquid Sunscreen is a new one to me that I think is ideal for easy application under make-up. It also offers a higher SPF which I really need this season. And Sensitive Skin Sunscreen Lotion is a top choice for anyone who needs extra protection.

I’ve tried a plethora of sunscreens over the years for myself and my family, and wanted to share a few tips for parents or caregivers on how to find the right sunscreen for their families.

How to choose the best sunscreen for kids:

1. Sun Protection Factor (SPF).

One of the most important factors to consider when choosing a sunscreen is how much sun protection you’ll need. Throughout the year, I rock moisturizer that already contains an SPF 15; however come summer that number has to be at least 30 to prevent sunburns. That means for extra sensitive, kid’s skin, an SPF of 30-45 is best…but even better is an SPF of 50, when playing directly under the sun.

In addition to SPF, you should look for a broad-spectrum label which is designed to protect against both UVA/UVB light types that can damage skin.

Note: Interestingly enough, many resources indicate that SPF 50 is the highest SPF that exists. So those over 50 only provide a small increase in UVB protection.

2. Application Method.

Sunscreens come in so many forms these days, from lotions and sprays to sunscreen sticks and wipes. These are supposed to make them easier to work with. For myself or any other adult, the lotions or sprays work well. But for little kids, sunscreen sprays are a big no-no because they have the potential to be inhaled! That’s why I really appreciate Neutrogena’s baby sunscreen stick that I can easily rub on my little one’s cheeks, nose and neck in one stroke. Nine out of ten times I have to wrestle my toddler to get sunblock on his face, so this has been a lifesaver!

3. Type of Activity.

If the kids will be in the pool or sprinkler, consider purchasing a water-resistant sunscreen. This will minimize the amount of sunblock you need to apply, but with ALL types of sun protection reapplication is always key to prevent burns!

4. Ingredients.

Oftentimes active ingredients and chemicals are required for the ideal result, but I still try to avoid harsh chemicals at all costs when it comes to products my children will be using. I usually look for all natural ingredients that are safe on sensitive skin. I love that Neutrogena’s Pure & Free Baby sunscreen stick is 100% naturally-sourced, fragrance free and ideal for hypoallergenic skin.

With young children, it’s important to look for extra gentle formulas that are ideal for delicate skin. Check the labels carefully to find what works for your family!

They say that knowledge is power. So knowing that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer, yet only 20% use SPF daily propels me to choose skin health for me and my family!

Have you used Neutrogena sunscreens on your children? What do you look for when choosing a form of sun protection?

I participated in an Influencer Activation on behalf of Influence Central for Veggie Fries. I received product samples to facilitate my review as well as a promotional item to thank me for my participation. All opinions and reviews are my own.

Like many parents with toddler-aged children, I’ve struggled to get my son to eat his veggies for some time now. It’s a daily battle we face, constantly coercing our picky-eater to finish all his greens. We offer yummy dessert rewards, threaten turning off the TV and even offer fun activity incentives. But 9 out of 10 times it’s all to no avail.

He spits out the broccoli. Pushes his plate of peas aside. And even manages to feed the dog some brussel sprouts…go figure!

It makes life a little stressful when you have cooked up several options to help make sure your child is consuming a nutritious meal, instead of just the milk and cereal or crackers he prefers.

So when all else fails, I think long and hard of all those foods my son already LOVES to eat…you know, the ones that don’t require any bribing! That means besides a healthy pizza recipe or smoothie treat, french fries ALWAYS come to mind!!

We’ve found sweet potato fries to be a great side dish option when our toddler refuses everything else. But we also recently had the opportunity to try the broccoli-flavored french fries from Veggie Fries! I didn’t even know any other veggie fries were available in the frozen section, so this was HUGE!!!

I wasn’t completely out of the loop, seeing as Veggie Fries is actually the first brand to market vegetable-based french fries! The founders of these fries were inspired to create a homemade, healthier option by their family love of french fries. The fries are crafted with a sophisticated blend of select farm-grown vegetables, legumes, herbs and spices and real potatoes sourced within the U.S.

I was so eager to go to the store and grab a bag for my son, especially to make the hectic week days cooking up meals a bit smoother. There’s always something going on and with the kids running around playing outside more, their appetite tends to follow. But I want to be sure they aren’t grabbing any old snack from the pantry when dinner time nears.

Broccoli is probably the least favorite veggie in our house, so I knew I had to give that one a try immediately.

The fries were super simple to include in our meal plan. I placed them in the oven for a few minutes, let them cool off and served alongside some meatballs my son enjoys.

Naturally he went for the fries first.

I told them they were “veggie” fries and couldn’t wait to see his reaction…

And I’m glad to report he LOVED them. I had to try them myself after I saw him clear his plate and was pleasantly surprised how tasty they were! I mean DELICIOUS!!!! Just the perfect blend of crispy, crunchy fries with a delicious broccoli flavor…I really can’t wait to go try the other flavors!

And if you’re questioning how healthy french fries are, know that all Veggie Fries products are made with all natural, non-GMO ingredients and are gluten-free. They are also vegan and free of soy, dairy, tree nuts, peanuts and eggs. Need further convincing? Veggie Fries are a good source of fiber, Vitamin A or C, and are very low in sodium, with 3+ grams of protein per serving!

You can try a variety of flavors from broccoli, carrot, chickpea/red pepper or tuscan bean and herb.

From May 15th through June 11th Stop & Shop is hosting a promotion for Veggie Fries where shoppers will receive $0.50 off their Veggie Fries purchases.

This is a compensated campaign in collaboration with Johnson’s® and Latina Bloggers Connect. All opinions are my 100% my own.

Did you know that every loving interaction with mom or dad can help baby’s developing brain?

From a gentle touch to a pleasant smell, everyday rituals and interactions children experience create memories that will stay with them for a lifetime.

Studies have shown that by age three, 85% of a baby’s brain is developed. That’s why it’s so important to begin stimulating baby’s senses from the moment of birth.

A mother’s touch especially can do wonders for her babies.

That loving touch has the power to soothe, delight and nurture baby’s developing mind. And we’ve all seen it: baby responds to our touch with giggles and coos, which in turn causes us to smile and laugh too. The continuous engagement is exactly what baby needs for learning, communicating and growing.

I cherish every expression of love I receive from my children during those bonding moments we share.

During our bath time routine, I love to let my boys splash about in the water and blow bubbles as we giggle together. It gets messy, but I know they are getting plenty of sensory stimulation like developing positive associations with bath smells — linked to improved mood and alertness.

My 1 year-old gets a thrill from simply splashing water with his hands and soaking himself in the process! He finds it hilarious :)!!

And my 3 year-old will use every excuse he can to take a bath. He finds so much joy and laughter in dumping water over his head and “swimming” with his sea creatures.

I know they love the time they get to spend in the bath and it makes me happy to know they will carry those positive memories with them for a lifetime.

Our bedtime rituals are also another important time when the power of touch and smell come into play.

Both my boys love a soothing back rub and lullaby as they drift off into dream land. My youngest is known to fall asleep quickly in my arms after a gentle rock and song. He finds comfort in my scent — which isn’t surprising considering babies recognize moms by smell alone!

However, getting my toddler to sleep has been more of a struggle recently. If I’m not there to massage his back or offer continuous hugs, he has fits and outbursts, crying for me to come in and hug him. And it makes sense that he seeks that comfort in touch because research has shown routine touch and massage helps improve sleep quality and quantity when part of a bedtime routine (whereas children who receive minimal touch and stimulation can often experience sleep disturbances).

So I always make it a point to go in and tuck him in, whether it’s to give him a rub or tousle his curls as we say a little bedtime prayer. He sometimes starts chatting up a storm and asking me if I like certain animals or cartoon characters like he does. It takes some time, but it’s a nice bonding time we share.

There’s never a dull moment in my life with the boys fighting for my attention, but it’s natural that they crave a mother’s constant touch and affection.

I’m trying to enjoy these moments while they last and remind myself that every touch, every hug, and every smile is stimulating and providing them a healthy development.

I’ve been in need of a great body scrub after the long harsh winter that has managed to leave my skin overly dry and flakey. My hands, knees, and feet have all suffered and are in need of an easy treatment to attain that smooth, supple baby soft skin as the warmer weather approaches.

And of course in a house surrounded by baby products, the first thing that came to mind was baby oil! I figured I could start with that to get smooth skin and the add a couple of other ingredients for a fun homemade sugar scrub.

But I didn’t just want to do any sugar scrub, I was looking to add some natural fruity ingredients to hydrate my skin even more. What better way to do that than to add an array of berries like raspberries, blueberries and blackberries which are said to contain anti-oxidants and multiple vitamins to help prevent wrinkles, blotchiness and even acne to maintain a youthful appearance.

So that’s when my berry sugar scrub for soft baby skin came to mind!

Here’s what you’ll need:

Affiliate links included below.

A small jar to store the scrub – I used a baby food jar, but this one is perfect too!

A mixing bowl

1-2 cups of granulated sugar

1/4 cup of baby oil

1/4 cup of baby wash

1/2 cup of berries (raspberries, blueberries etc.)

First you’ll want to measure out 1-2 cups of sugar depending on how much sugar scrub you’re looking to make. I used a little under 2 cups because I wanted a smoother consistency for a softer feel on the skin (similar to this one).

Combine about 1/4 cup of baby oil and baby wash to the sugar – adding more or less depending on the consistency you prefer. I used my favorite type of baby oil from JOHNSON’S along with their head-to-toe line baby body wash.

Use a blender to grind the berries and then pour that mixture into the sugar.

I used my empty baby jars for easy storage and topped with a couple extra berries — which almost gave my sugar scrub a smoothie look, haha!

<img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-6759" title="DIY Berry Sugar Scrub | An easy, homemade sugar scrub to get baby soft skin.
You can use the scrub as an exfoliator, hand scrub or full body scrub anytime it’s needed.

This is such an easy way to get soft, hydrated skin without leaving your house! It also makes a wonderful homemade gift idea, especially as Mother’s Day approaches. Because we all know mom could use a little rejuvenation from time to time!

This is a sponsored post by me on behalf of Gerber®. All opinions are my own.

These days with two little ones more active than ever, fighting and making messes all over the house, it’s tough not to feel defeated. There is always a bit of tantrums, crying and yelling to add to the chaotic days. I find myself saying, “NO!” more often than yes.

NO! You can’t push your brother and take all his toys!

NO! You can’t eat dog food!

NO! You can’t eat a donut for breakfast…lunch and dinner!

It’s just the reality of the times, with a cranky baby exploring the world around him and a toddler who is always pushing the limit. So it’s no secret I’m constantly on the look out for those win-win moments.

YES! You can go “dino-hunting” with your brother!

YES! You can scratch Gizmo’s tummy!

YES! Of course, you can have more of that spinach smoothie!

And Gerber® understands these win-win moments that come about when both mom and baby are happy. That’s what the Gerber® Graduates® line is all about: nutritious and yummy foods that we can all appreciate.

My little ones can’t get enough of their wholesome meal options and snacks. One of their favorites are the Puffs cereal and lil’ Crunchies snacks in veggie and ranch flavor. It’s a snack that I’m happy to let them munch on throughout the day.

And now until April 27th, Gerber is happy to spread those win-win moments with the Gerber Graduates Win-Win Moment campaign. A campaign where families get rewarded with a Gerber Graduates gift bundle (consisting of a meal mat and bib valued at $11.98) just for buying foods they already love!

Participating is easy. Simply purchase 10 Gerber Graduates meal items on the same receipt and upload a picture of the receipt to the Gerber website.

So if you are already buying Gerber Graduates food for your little ones (like we are!) why not get some useful feeding products in the process. That’s what I call win-win!

Don’t forget to grab your #GerberWinWinMoment swag and connect with Gerber on Facebook and Twitter.

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #NaturalGoodness #CollectiveBias

With Earth Day right around the corner, I’ve been thinking of ways to help my little ones learn the importance of going green and caring for the environment. Even though they are still quite young, it’s really never too early to start modeling good behavior so that one day they can make the same responsible choices.

Looking to teach your little ones earth-friendly habits too? It’s not as hard as you might think. Between setting basic house “rules” and a little creativity you can make it happen. Here are 4 ways you can help raise kids who care about the environment just as much as you do!

1. Turn off the lights.

How many times do you look around the house to find lights on in every room…especially when not in use? It happens more often than not when you are chasing little ones from room to room, but one of the best ways to model eco-friendly behavior for kids is by conserving energy. This means keeping the lights off as kids go through the whole potty routine, especially during the day. At night, you can make it fun for kids by having them flip the switch when entering and then again when leaving the room.

2. Use less toilet paper.

Making sure your kids use no more toilet paper than they actually need is a tough concept to get through…especially if you’re in the midst of potty training! Toddlers in particular, see toilet paper as just another fun material to tear up and flush down the toilet in wads (yikes!). But reminding them to not overdue it is important if you’re looking to raise earth-conscious kiddos. To help, I also like to keep the toilet paper roll aside and hand over only what is needed.

3. Conserve water.

Let’s face the facts: kids love to play with water. Whether it’s splashing around in the bathtub, letting the water run a little extra when brushing teeth or going crazy flushing, kids never seem to get enough of it. However, you can teach kids to be mindful of how much water they are wasting by keeping tabs on how much water they start with. An easy way to do this is to use a plug in both the tub and sink so that you aren’t constantly running water during grooming time.

4. Choose natural products.

You may be surprised at all the harsh chemicals you find in everyday grooming products when you take the time to read the labels. Oftentimes you find dangerous toxins that are not only bad for the environment but also bad for your health! That’s why whenever I can, I like to make sure my family (kids included!) strives to use natural products like Tom’s of Maine. These products are made with no artificial colors, flavors, fragrances or preservatives.

It’s another brutal snow day here in the North East. And flu/cold season is in full swing. My little one has now been sick for about 11 days straight. He started out with a fever, which we then found out was the precursor to Roseola (a rash/virus combo) which then transitioned into Croup’s cough + fever. He is finally recovering, but still fighting a severe cough and runny nose, especially at night. So, yes it’s been a heck of a cold season here to say the least.

After trying a variety of treatments to fight the virus/cold, and following the doctor’s orders without much success, I decided to end the frustration and ask around to see what worked for other moms.

Here is a compilation of what they said and therefore on my must-try cold remedies list for infants and toddlers. (Note: Always check with your doctor first before administering any medicines.)

1. Acetaminophen

If your child starts out with a fever (usually 101 or above is a good indicator) stock up on some Tylenol/acetaminophen. This will help bring down the high temperature and alleviate any pain. Infants Tylenol is what you’ll need for children under 2 years of age. (You can read my post about tylenol as a must-have travel item.)

2. Cool-Mist Humidifier

The first thing the doctor will probably tell you when treating a cold/cough is to use a humidifier. A humidifier moistens dry winter air and acts as a great natural decongestant, especially overnight when a cough can peak. Sometimes there is confusion regarding a cool-mist vs warm-mist, but most will recommend a cool-mist since it is safer than having hot water in a child’s room.

3. Vaporizer

Hot water vaporizers work similarly to the cool-mist humidifiers, but release steam heat instead and often come with menthol vapors which help loosen up mucus. If you go with this option, keep an eye out to prevent burns.

4. Saline Nose Drops

Saline nose drops are a must for both dry AND runny noses. I used these drops when my son suffered from colds as an infant and continue to do so as he grows. Saline solution is simply a combo of salt and water that soothes inflamed nasal tissues and loosens mucus. While saline drops help baby breath better and can treat the symptoms of a cold, they do not shorten the lifespan of a virus…so a cold can go on for several days after usage.

5. Bulb Syringe

Everyone knows a baby or young toddler can’t really blog their own nose. That’s where a bulb syringe comes into play. The bulb helps suck out the clogged mucus in nasal passages to help with breathing. However, sometimes you’ll need to squeeze some of the saline spray in before using one to make sure you aren’t irritating them.

6. Hyland’s Cough Syrup

Okay so this one may be a little controversial. Most doctors advise against giving children under the age of 4 any type of cough medicine. Apparently there aren’t effective medicines at this age and it’s also safer for a baby’s body to work up an immunity. While I agree with this, it can be frustrating to just sit and watch your little one deal with spasmodic coughs. I do know that there are other doctors who therefore suggest a homeopathic cough syrup like Hyland’s. It’s gentle enough for coughs in babies, but only helps with a basic to mild cough associated with the common cold (usually won’t do much for the severe kind like Croups).

7. Vick’s BabyRub

A lot of moms I asked said they swore by Vick’s Vapor Rub (baby version) to help fight a nasty cold. Vick’s contains natural fragrances of eucalyptus, rosemary and lavender that can act as soothing agents to calm a fussy baby. Just rub a bit on baby’s back or chest to provide relief.

8. Steamed Showers

Similar to the humidifiers and vaporizers I mentioned, steamed showers can work great for croupy coughs. Ten to fifteen minutes near a steamy hot shower will loosen chest congestion and help relieve a severe cough.

9. Plenty of Fluids

May seem like a no-brainer, but we can often forget that hydration is key during cold season. Fluids thin mucus secretions and keeps baby better-equipped to fight off germs and infection. It’s also important to note, that whatever type of milk baby is drinking should be continued, especially if they have a lose of appetite.

10. TLC

Sometimes the best remedy is simply giving your sick child plenty of tender love and care. The poor things often become lethargic and need snuggles more than ever. Extra hugs and time with mommy can at least provide some reassurance that all is okay.

Hope this list will help provide your little one’s some relief this winter. I tried all of the above remedies and happy my little man is finally recovering from a tough cold season!
