Tips for Traveling in the Big City with Baby in Tow

Traveling with a baby in the biggest city in the U.S. is no easy feat! It takes patience, practice and preparedness. You have to be ready to deal with crowded subways, packed like sardines in a jar, and have some experience maneuvering around a fast-paced environment.

Most importantly, New York moms need to find a balance between packing everything baby needs + only the essentials. I lived and worked in the city that never sleeps for a few years before becoming a mom and knew all to well how hectic and overwhelming traveling could be for the average person, let alone a mom with babies. So every time I make the trip out to visit now, I remember what’s important!

Tips for Visiting a Big City with a Baby or Toddler

Below are TOP tips for moms traveling with baby in a big city like NYC should keep in mind for minimal stress.

1. Pack a light bag.

One of easiest ways to make traveling in the big city easier is to pack lightly. When you’re a mom to little ones this can be challenging. I like to think about what I will need in a jam: a few diapers, a small wipe case, a changing pad, bib, teether or favorite toy and bottle or nursing cover. All items that are a must for baby, yet small enough to fit in a hand bag without putting a strain on mommy’s back! You don’t want to be traveling with a big bulky diaper bag that just takes up space. And if you do happen to run out of something, the greatest part of a big city is that you can find pharmacies at almost every corner!

You can even find a money-saving coupon for Huggies diapers at CVS HERE.

2. Use a baby carrier.

Using a baby carrier to run your errands not only frees your hands so you can shop or grab a bite to eat, it also makes it much easier to navigate through subways, tight toll entrances, and climbing up and down stairs! It is a BIG must for no hassle easy traveling, especially if you are doing it alone and don’t have someone to give you a hand in a hurry.

3. Remember to sanitize

Let’s face it: the city can be a grimy, dirty place. If you’re traveling with a little one, anything that helps combat germs is a MUST! Kids like to reach out and touch every thing in sight which can make moms a bit nervous sometimes. I like to keep extra wipes and tissues within an arm’s reach (in my pocket or portable wipe case) because rummaging through bags when the unexpected happens is not something I want to be stressing over. (Friends and family in the city also recommend carrying extra plastic bags in case you need to make an emergency diaper change on a dirty floor or bench – you can lay it under a thin comfy changing pad to keep baby clean!)

Are you a mom navigating around in a big city? How do you make traveling with little ones easier?

I love the pack light suggestion because let’s be honest babies come with A LOT of stuff so it’s good to remember we don’t need all of it!

YES! Packing light is one of the most important things you can do…it’s just a matter of narrowing it down to the essentials.

I’m in the opposite of the city – I totally live in the country. We moved here from the big city, but it is insane how small my current town is. I have to drive 45 minutes to get to our pediatrician and 40 minutes to get to the nearest CVS! isn’t that crazy? I have always wanted to go to NYC but haven’t made it there yet. 🙁 Maybe some day soon! #client

I want to go to New York so bad. My husband was born there. Now that our kids are older I think they would love the trip. It looks like you had an awesome time and managed well with a little one in tow. Thanks for sharing your tips! (And yes, sanitize!!)
