Do you ever think about what today’s modern family means? To some, this may be a variation on the nuclear family including same-sex parents who decide to adopt, single-parents raising a handful of kids or simply the extended family living together and caring for one another along the way. It really all depends on your perspective and background in life.
To me, the modern family or La Familia de Hoy is simply the Latino family that has adapted to the modern culture and lifestyle but still retains those core traditional family values of love, commitment and support…despite all the chaos surrounding them.
One family that I think represents this quite well, is the Jiménez Family — a large family of predominantly Mexican background consisting of three smaller families, all interconnected by a backyard bringing in a sense of unity. At the head of the family, is Juan: a soccer coach, financial advisor and active volunteer married to Biviana (Columbian) a soccer mom, transitioning from stay-at-home mom to working mom.
Surrounded by moms, dads, brothers, sisters and 7 children (with another on the way!) their commitment to family and culture is quite admirable. They make time for one another but still lead very active lives with their own children: Eliza (age 11) making honor-roll, Diego (age 9) passionately pursuing soccer, and even the youngest Benecio (age 5) driven by a curious and energetic personality. Keeping family as close as possible, yet pursuing their own individual goals and passions, they truly seem to embody what it means to be La Familia de Hoy.
Johnson & Johnson and Univision have launched a campaign to find an authentic, modern and active family to be La Familia de Hoy. Three beautiful and deserving families are in the running for this role, but my vote is going to the Jiménez Family.
With family on everyone’s mind this holiday season, I encourage you to take a moment, read each family’s story and vote for your favorite — it only takes minute!!
