My back is killing me, again!
How many times have I uttered these words? Sadly, almost every single day of my life for the last 12 years! Chronic back pain and doctor visits after doctor visits have become the norm for me. My hard-as-a-rock back, stiff joints and swollen muscles would stump almost every doctor, and MRI after MRI never revealed anything other than inflammation…which didn’t sound all that bad. But when one specialist looked at my list of symptoms and lack of diagnoses, he said it could be rheumatoid arthritis.
Yes, rheumatoid arthritis! It’s a chronic inflammatory disorder that affects the lining of the joints – typically occurring in the hands and feet – but it can affect other tissues and organs. This was new to me! It can be a disabling and painful disease that may lead to long-term joint damage. This, not so much.
Of course the idea that I could have arthritis before I was 30, was hard for me to comprehend since my pain wasn’t in those typical areas or joints you think of when you think arthritis (aka shoulders, knees, wrists). My pain is localized to the upper back, right under the scapula — a very odd place to expect arthritis!
Even though I did an extensive amount of research while trying to understand the symptoms, I wish I had known about LifeScript.com when my pain began. This web resource provides medical information, tips and advice written by health writers, experts and physicians.

Thanks for sharing this. I know that it can be really hard to find good unbiased medical advice when we need something. It seems like so many sites base their advice on some “miracle product” they are selling. It’s nice to know a place where you can go to find real advice!
